We work in marble, quartzite, onyx, granite, engineered stone and large-format porcelain, and we've been New Zealand's first large-format porcelain since 2015 and a leading New Zealand stone fabricator for nearly three decades. Architects, designers, builders, developers and cabinetmakers bring us the design intent. We bring the material knowledge.
Decades of Experience and Industry Recognition
Since 2000
Granite Workshop was founded in Auckland in 2000 and has designed, fabricated and installed architectural stone from Glenfield ever since.
It's a Kiwi family business. Mark and Sue Hopwood bought it in 2018 and run it together, and the next generation is already in — their son James works as an architectural stone consultant across sales and projects. For an architect or designer, that means something specific: the people quoting your job are the people whose name is on it, decisions get made on the floor rather than referred upward, and the person you dealt with on this project will be here for the next one.
The investment since 2018 has gone into plant and people. We hold the sole New Zealand distributorship for istone by Inalco.
What hasn't changed is where every job begins.
The people
Machinery can be bought. Judgement cannot.
Four master artisans, each with 30-35 years in stone fabrication and installation, backed by a highly skilled team on the floor. They are why we accept work other fabricators decline: delicate marble, onyx, travertine, large format porcelain, limestone, quartzite — materials that move, carry fissures, and punish a wrong cut.
Our template technicians and installers take on the detailing we're asked for at its most intricate — handcrafted integrated bathroom vanity and basins, mitred waterfall ends, full-height book-matched surrounds and interiors of super yachts.
Mark Hopwood — Managing Director
Mark brings 30 years of leadership experience across construction, property, manufacturing and engineering, including senior executive roles.
Having led large construction and manufacturing businesses, he understands the importance of programme, coordination, accuracy and accountability. That leadership and experience shape the way Granite Workshop approaches every project — from planning and technical problem-solving through to fabrication, scheduling and installation.
For clients and project teams, it means a practical, commercially experienced approach focused on delivering the stone scope accurately, efficiently and seamlessly.
Joe Gibson — Commercial Director
Joe has spent his working life in stone. He learned stone masonry from his father in the United Kingdom before establishing and running his own stone importing and manufacturing business for 20 years.
His experience also includes senior purchasing roles with a major stone wholesaler and hands-on technical templating, giving him an unusually broad understanding of stone from quarry and slab selection through to fabrication and installation.
Joe’s specialist knowledge of natural stone varieties, their characteristics, performance and fabrication requirements is an important resource for our clients and project partners. He is particularly valued by industry peers when a material, detail or technical challenge requires experienced judgement and a practical solution.
Capability
CNC machining and waterjet cutting, so internal cutouts are radiused, and there are no stress risers for a crack to start from. The latest Pro Liner digital templating. Full-sheet handling for large-format porcelain, interior and exterior. Wet processing throughout — no dry cutting, in the workshop or on site.
