At Granite Workshop, that expertise runs through every phase — selection, design, templating, fabrication and installation. Mark Hopwood, our managing director, has spent thirty years leading property, construction and manufacturing businesses at chief executive level. Joe Gibson, our commercial director, is the person other fabricators ring when they've got a problem they can't solve. Four master stone artisans with more than thirty years each set the standard on the floor, and a specialist team of craftsmen hold it.
That's what lets us take on the detail that matters most — from a marble kitchen benchtop and splashback to an onyx book-matched feature wall, a marble or porcelain staircase or a quartzite handcrafted bespoke integrated vanity — and get it there on programme.
We work in marble, quartzite, onyx, granite, engineered stone and large-format porcelain, and we've been New Zealand's first large-format porcelain since 2015 and a leading New Zealand stone fabricator for many decades. Architects, designers, builders, developers and cabinetmakers bring us the design intent. We bring the material knowledge.
Decades of Experience and Industry Recognition
Since 1998
Granite Workshop was founded in Auckland in 1998 and has designed, fabricated and installed architectural stone from Glenfield ever since.
It's a Kiwi family business. Mark and Sue Hopwood bought it in 2018 and run it together, and the next generation is already in — their son James works as an architectural stone consultant across sales and projects. For an architect or designer, that means something specific: the people quoting your job are the people whose name is on it, decisions get made on the floor rather than referred upward, and the person you dealt with on this project will be here for the next one.
The investment since 2018 has gone into plant and people. We hold the sole New Zealand distributorship for istone by Inalco.
What hasn't changed is where every job begins.
The people
Machinery can be bought. Judgement cannot.
Four master artisans, each with 30-35 years in stone fabrication and installation. They are why we accept work other fabricators decline: delicate marble, onyx, travertine, large format porcelain, limestone, quartzite — materials that move, carry fissures, and punish a wrong cut.
Our template technicians and installers take on the detailing we're asked for at its most intricate — handcrafted integrated bathroom vanity and basins, mitred waterfall ends, full-height book-matched surrounds and interiors of super yachts.
Mark Hopwood — Managing Director
Thirty years leading businesses across property construction, manufacturing and engineering, including at chief executive level.
Mark has run construction teams, so he knows what a late delivery does to a programme. He has run manufacturing businesses, so he knows what holding a tolerance actually costs. Few people in this stone industry have done both, and it shows in how we schedule projects, resolve problems, and deliver seamlessly.
Joe Gibson — Commercial Director
Taught stone masonry by his father in the United Kingdom. He ran his own stone importing and manufacturing business for 20 years. General manager for purchasing at a major stone wholesaler and technical experience as a templater for a stone pioneer company.
Joe is regarded in New Zealand for the deepest stone knowledge of stone varieties, characteristics, performance, technical expertise, and legendary stone artisan expertise. When other operators in this industry hit a problem they can't solve, or require guidance, they contact him.
Capability
CNC machining and waterjet cutting, so internal cutouts are radiused, and there are no stress risers for a crack to start from. The latest Pro Liner digital templating. Full-sheet handling for large-format porcelain, interior and exterior. Wet processing throughout — no dry cutting, in the workshop or on site.
